Meet the team

Mr Roger Guy

  • Job Title: Headteacher
  • Experience:

BSc Psychology , PGCE Primary - Swansea University

I have been fortunate to be the Headteacher of Gilwern Primary School for over twenty years. The role of Headteacher has changed in many ways over time although the core job remains consistent:- “helping children and staff become the best they can be”.

In addition to my focus on Gilwern I also work as a system leader in the development of education throughout Wales. This involves being an Associate of the National Academy of Educational Leadership, Challenge Advisor (EAS Region) and Estyn Inspector.

  • Class/Year Group: N/A
  • Class/Group Ethos:

The school has a simple strap line- Nurture, Empower, Achieve . As a leader I have recognised that education is about a lot more than just academic attainment in maths and English, although functional competence in both of these is necessary. The introduction of the New Curriculum will transform our educational system. Gilwern has been at the forefront of this change since 2015 as a Pioneer School.

I am totally committed to the vision of Successful Futures, which bases learning on four purposes, developing pupils as:-

ambitious capable learners, who are ready to learn throughout their lives,

healthy confident individuals who are ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society,

enterprising, creative contributors who are ready to play a full part in life and work,

ethical, informed citizens who are ready to be citizens of Wales and the world.

Personally, I’ve never been more motivated or committed to ensuring that children of Gilwern and across Wales receive a world class education. An education which equips them to enter adulthood and thrive, facing new challenges and exciting opportunity in equal measure.

  • Fun Bits:

I’m married with two grown up sons who both attended Gilwern Primary and still look back at Gilwern with fond memories. Sport has always played a big part in my life and I currently coach USK RFC which keeps me grounded! My annual trundle around the Cardiff Half Marathon takes longer each year but the purpose remains focused.

My wife and I enjoy travelling and have been fortunate to visit many schools throughout the world. Reflection always helps us to appreciate how lucky we are to live in the wonderful country of Wales.

Mrs S Marles

  • Job Title: Deputy Headteacher
  • Experience:

I have worked at Gilwern Primary for 8 years embracing every opportunity. During my time at Gilwern I have taught Foundation Phase and KS2 pupils. Everyday is different in the world of learning and teaching which makes it a pretty special place to be.

  • Class/Year Group: Dosbarth Tri
  • Class/Group Ethos:

Make every day amazing! That is my mantra! Be the best you can be, anything is possible if you try hard enough…

  • Fun Bits:

I enjoy keeping fit and healthy by running and swimming regularly. If I had a superpower it would be to freeze time so I could achieve more each day and spend more time watching my children grow. The most popular food in the Marles household is Italian cuisine, we even have a go at speaking the language! Ciao Bella!

Mrs B Edwards

  • Job Title: Deputy Headteacher and Class Teacher
  • Experience:

In my time at Gilwern I have taught in every year group and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge each year group brings. For me it's important to create a challenging learning environment that empowers learners to achieve excellence.

  • Class/Year Group: Dosbarth Derbyn
  • Class/Group Ethos:

I pride myself on creating a positive climate of learning across the school and hope that every learner walks into sunshine as they start their day in Gilwern. I believe that teachers who love teaching teach children to love learning!

  • Fun Bits:

Music for me is a common languauge for everyone and I like nothing more than a good sing in assembly! My weekends are filled with walks in the woods searching for sticks which are suitable to be used as pirate swords to play with my beautiful boys. The way to my heart is a nice strong "cuppa tea" and a chocolate hobnob.

Miss V Price

  • Fun Bits:

A great day is packing a picnic and going for a family walk, it’s always a close contest who gets the muddiest, us or the dog!
