April 2018

The Big Pedal 2018

Gilwern Primary held the Big Pedal this year on 20th April. The event was organised to promote a love of cycling and scooting, develop physical development skills and to raise an awareness of cycling and scooting safety.

Our target was to cycle and scoot a total of 1,413km throughout the day; the distance around the coastline of Wales.

The Year 6 children were in charge of calculating the distance that was travelled. Firstly, the measured and marked out the tracks: 200 metres for the junior bikes, 110 metres for the junior scooters and 90 meters for the infants. They then took it in turns throughout the day to tally the number of laps that were completed on each track. At break time, lunchtime and at the end of the day, they totalled up the number of laps completed, multiplied this by the distance of the track so had a total in metres. They then converted this in to kilometres and the distance travelled was drawn on to the map. The map helped up track how far around the coastline we had travelled at different points during the day.

By the end of the day, we had more than achieved our target. As a school, we actually travelled 1,512km on our bikes and scooters.

Over the next 2 weeks, the big pedal challenge is still on. We are hoping that as many children and parents ride, scoot or cycle in to school as possible. We will be collecting and keeping a record of this data to see if travelling to school in an active way has had an impact on our health, concentration and look at how we may have helped to reduce our carbon footprint in doing this.
