Artistic Sophia wins card decoration competition

A nine-year-old girl from Gilwern has shown her creative side by winning a poster design competition.

Leading house builder Charles Church launched the art competition in conjunction with Gilwern Primary School.

Children at the school were challenged to design posters promoting the new houses at Charles Church East Wales’ The Alders development in Abergavenny Road.

All of the colourful designs were put in front of Charles Church’s management team.

After much deliberating, the team selected Sophia Clark’s design as the winner.

Sophia won art equipment for her efforts.

Sarah Foulkes, marketing co-ordinator at Charles Church East Wales, said: “We had some fantastic entries and it was really tough to pick a winner.

We loved the detail that Sophia had put into her coloured pencil design.

“There are people talking to each other on the street, cars on the road and even a dog.

“It was nice that Sophia incorporated some Welsh as well.”

Joanna Broad, Acting Deputy Headteacher at Gilwern Primary School said '' the school thought it was such a lovely initiative to involve the children in welcoming new residents to Gilwern. We are thrilled that Sophia was such a worthy winner.''

“Congratulations to Sophia for emerging as the overall winner.”

Eisteddfod 2016

St David's Day this year was celebrated by holding our annual school Eisteddfod. For the reception class and any new pupils in the school, this was the first of many Eisteddfods. All the children enjoyed a fun filled day where everyone was able to showcase their talents. The children dressed in either traditional Welsh costume or Welsh sporting outfits. Congratulations to Blue house who were the winners of this years competition.

World Book Day

Last weeks celebrations ended with World Book Day. The children came dressed in a lovely array of costumes, in the theme of Alice in Wonderland in KS2 and Beatrix Potter in the Foundation Phase. The Costumes added to the fun of this literacy filled day, with the children producing some excellent work.
