Mr Guy

NAME: Roger Guy
JOB TITLE: Headteacher
EXPERIENCE: I completed a BSc(Hons) Psychology and PGCE at Swansea University. My early teaching experiences were in Brynglas, Woodlands and Trellech. I was appointed Deputy Headteacher in Gilwern in 1993 and became Head in 2000. I am now fortunate to have been able to build a fantastic team to take the school forward. The pupils of Gilwern always come first in all aspects of my professional life. In addition to school I have been Chair of the Abergavenny Headteachers group for a number of years and represent Monmouthshire on the Welsh International Dimension in Education group and WAG Leadership Development and Implementation Group.

CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: Developing an ethos of life long learning through enjoyment and discovery. Providing opportunity for all in the school community to fulfil their potential.
FUN BITS: Rwy'n mwynhau pob math o chwaraeon ac Rwy'n hyfforddi rygbi ac rwy'n chwarae golff. My family life includes running around for two teenage sons!
If I had a superpower I'd make each day a bit longer.


Mrs Marles

NAME: Sue Marles
JOB TITLE: Deputy Head Teacher
EXPERIENCE: Since graduating in 2003 I worked at Cross Ash Primary School gaining class teaching responsibility across the primary phase. I am now embracing a new challenge of Deputy Headship.
CLASS/YEAR GROUP: Year 5
CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: I aim to create a stimulating learning environment where children come in happily in the morning and go home, bursting with stories of the day's activities!
FUN BITS: Fy hoff fwyd yw siocled. Dw i'n hoffi nofi. I am also a keen netball player and love going to Zumba. My superpower would be to have super human speed.


Mrs Edwards

NAME: Brady Edwards
JOB TITLE: Class Teacher (Foundation Phase Leader)
EXPERIENCE: I started working at Gilwern School in December 2007. I am co-ordinator of Curriculum Development, skills, planning (foundation phase) and have recently taken over as co-ordinator of Numeracy.
International School Partnership leader.

Mrs Broad

NAME: Joanna Broad
JOB TITLE: Class Teacher ( SENCO)
EXPERIENCE: I am co-ordinator of Curriculum development, Skills and Planning. I am responsible for Performance Management, Wellbeing/PSHE/SEAL, Behaviour Management, Support Staff Management and Learning Clubs Management.

CLASS/YEAR GROUP: Reception
CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: I see myself as an approachable teacher who likes to share a joke with children but also mixed with respect. I am very fair and listen carefully to what children need. I like to give children the confidence they need to feel they could achieve anything. I like nothing better than a tidy classroom at the end of a day.
FUN BITS: Fi yn hoffi mynd i'r sinema a gweld sioeau cerdd.I have 2 young sons and really enjoy my moments at home with them. My favourite meal would always be a good sunday roast, but preferably cooked by someone else! There is nothing better than laughter- so I enjoy Comedians and have seen many. If I had the chance to have a superpower I would definitely love eyes in the back of my head!


Mrs Conway

NAME: Melissa Conway
JOB TITLE: Class Teacher
EXPERIENCE: I started in Gilwern School in September 2007.
CLASS/YEAR GROUP: Year 3
CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: I aim to create a happy creative teaching environment where all are valued. I take a positive and enthusiastic approach to teaching to suit the needs of the individual pupils in my care.
FUN BITS: Fi yn hoffi chwarae golff a mynd am deithiau cerddedd gyda fy ci. Long walks with my dog is a weekend must. I like nothing better than a Friday night take-away. My superpower would be to actually be able to do the 10,000 jobs that need doing at once.


Mrs Parry

NAME: Anna Parry
JOB TITLE: Class Teacher
EXPERIENCE: ICT Co-ordinator, History Co-ordinator and School Council.
CLASS/YEAR GROUP: Year 5
CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: I endeavour to provide a friendly and welcoming classroom environment where children are inspired. I encourage the children to gain a sense of achievement and an ability to work independently. A range of opportunities and a wide variety of experiences make Year 2 a fun place to be. My expertise is in Science and I promote learning of skills in this area.
FUN BITS: Rwy'n mwynhau gwylio rygbi - Cymru a Pontypool. My favourite food is curry.I also enjoy watching live ballet. I like reading and am a big fan of Harry Potter. Superpower - I would like to be able to fly.


Mrs Preece

NAME: Christine Preece
JOB TITLE: School Administrator
EXPERIENCE: I have worked as a part of the team at Gilwern School since 2003. Taking care of the time schedules and paperwork gives the teaching and support staff more quality time with the pupils.

CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: Any one visiting the school can instantly sense the friendly, welcoming ethos. I feel that I contribute to this. I am intensely loyal to the staff and the school community as a whole, simply because they deserve it!`
FUN BITS: Rwy'n mwynhau eu gwyliau yn Ffrainc a fi wyf yn Ffrangeg dysgu yn Coleg Gwent. My favourite food would probably be Mexican dishes however a good beef stew is hard to beat. I love going to the theatre and need to make more time to do so. I enjoy watching (and much to my familys disgust) commentating loudly on International Rugby matches. I enjoy a family walk with my two dogs and doing crosswords/sudukos. My superpower would be to be in lots of places at the same time!!


Mrs Beynon

NAME: Sarah Beynon
JOB TITLE: Assistant Admin
EXPERIENCE: Following 15 years in recruitment and payroll I decided to retrain as a LSA. I completed my level 3 training at Ebbw Vale college. I started work at Gilwern School in January 2010, and I'm enjoying every minute.

CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: I am friendly, approachable person with a sunny disposition. I enjoy seeing children progress within the school environment. The key to learning is keeping it fun.
FUN BITS: Rwy'n hoffi bwyd Mecsico a siocled. I like to spend quality time with my family.
If I had a superpower I would like to click my fingers and all my jobs would be done!


Mrs Collins

NAME: Claire Collins
JOB TITLE: Higher Level teaching Assistant
EXPERIENCE: Gilwern Primary School has been my place of employment since June 2001. In 2004 I qualified as a HLTA and cover PPA. In September 2011 I graduated with a BA(HONS)in Education.

Miss Smith

NAME: Lisa Smith
JOB TITLE: Learning Support Assistant
EXPERIENCE: I have worked in Gilwern School since 2004 as an LSA in the foundation phase. I have an NVQ Level 3 in Children's Care, Learning and Development.

CLASS/YEAR GROUP: Year 2
CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: To provide support for all children and establish a positive learning environment to nurture and develop all childrens strengths.
FUN BITS: Rwy'n chwarae dartiau merched ar gyfer y fenni .I also play in a mixed Crickhowell and District League, where I am currently the Ladies Single Champion. My favourite food would have to be a roast dinner minus the veg.I also enjoy watching football. My favourite football team is Manchester United. My Superpower would be invincibility.


Mr Gibson

NAME: Thomas Gibson
JOB TITLE: Teaching Assistant
EXPERIENCE: BTEC In IT. Cache Dip. Level 3 in Childcare and Education. I worked for several years with National Childrens Homes, working with children who had special needs.

CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: I am a patient, calm person who enjoys the fun side of life. I bring these into the classroom to enhance childrens learning.
FUN BITS: Rwy'n mwynhau chwarae pel-droed and I support Manchester United. I love any food you can dip chips in. I support Manchester United and play for a local team. I would love the ability to stop time.


Mrs Davies

NAME: Janine Davies
JOB TITLE: Learning Support Assistant
EXPERIENCE: Before becoming a LSA I worked for 20 years in public orientated services. I thoroughly enjoy my role in school and am proud to be part of a successful team.

Mrs Morgan

NAME: Katy Morgan
JOB TITLE: HLTA (Foundation Phase PPA Cover and support)
EXPERIENCE: I have worked at Gilwern school since 1997 after I qualified as an NNEB at Usk College. I have completed a degree in Early Years at Newport University and now work at the school on a part time basis.
CLASS/YEAR GROUP: N/A
CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: As Read, Write, Inc. Co-ordinator, I aim not only to promote literacy throughout the school but provide children with the skills to become independent and confident with literacy. Working with all ages across the Foundation Phase, I am aware of all learning styles and abilities, which allows me to adapt my approach to teaching to suit the diverse learning styles of the children.

Mrs Millington

NAME: Melanie Millington
JOB TITLE: Class Teacher
EXPERIENCE: I started working at Gilwern School in 2011 and enjoyed getting to know children throughout the school. I have been a teacher for a long time and worked in lots of schools. I am loving the new challenge of teaching in the Foundation Phase and helping coordinate the Eco Explorers.

FUN BITS: Rwy'n hoffi mynd nofio gyda fy mab. I love to read and if I had any spare time I would make things with my sewing machine. My superpower would be to be in two places at the same time.


Miss Pugh

NAME: Samantha Pugh
JOB TITLE: LSA
EXPERIENCE: I gained my Level 3 in Childcare and Education in 2011 and I am currently studying a BSc (Hons) in Childhood studies together with a Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Childrens Care, Learning and Development.
I am Senior Playworker at Hopscotch Childcare Afterschool Club.

CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: To provide a secure and stimulating environment that is conducive to all children having the opportunity to reach their full potential.
FUN BITS: My favourite food is a good Indian takeaway. I enjoy going to the gym regularly; I also work as a Domiciliary Care. If I had a superpower, it would be the power of healing!


Mrs Tompkins

NAME: Helen Tompkins
JOB TITLE: LSA
EXPERIENCE: After gaining my NNEB qualification, I worked as an LSA at Ebbw Vale Comprehensive School. I then moved to work for the Monmouthshire Pupil Referral Service before joining Gilwern School in 2011.
CLASS/YEAR GROUP: Year 3
CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: To support children's learning and to help them reach their full potential in a positive and safe environment.
FUN BITS: I enjoy baking and cake decorating. I also like to read.
My superpower would be to click my fingers and have everything I needed done in an instant.


Miss Lloyd

NAME: Joanna Lloyd
JOB TITLE: Class Teacher
EXPERIENCE: I started working at Gilwern School in September 2014, having previously taught in Monmouthshire and Powys County Schools since graduating. I have found Gilwern School a very happy, friendly and welcoming team to join.
CLASS/YEAR GROUP: Year 4
CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: One of may favourite quotes is 'The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another'. (Marva Collins).

FUN BITS: When I'm not in school, I'm running around after the animals on the farm with the sheepdog. I also enjoy fiddling in the garden, trying to make the vegetables grow that bit faster! My favourite meal would have to be a roast dinner, with all the vegetables freshly picked from my garden. Fy hoff fwyd yw siocled. My superpower would be to fly in the sky looking down at all the hustle and bustle below.


Miss Green

NAME: Amy Green
JOB TITLE: Learning Support Assistant
EXPERIENCE: I have worked in two schools prior to Gilwern with a range of children of primary age. I have a BA (Hons)Education degree, which I obtained at the University of Newport.
CLASS/YEAR GROUP: Year 1
CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: To support and enhance children's learning in a safe and stimulating environment, to enable them to reach their full potential.
FUN BITS: Dw i'n hoffi siarad cymraeg ac nofio, achos mae'n gwych. My favourite food is sweet and sour chicken. My superpower would be to make everyone happy. In my spare time I enjoy cricket and ocassionaly teach swimming lessons. I am also the child welfare officer for my local cricket club.


Mrs Greenman

NAME: Kate Greenman
JOB TITLE: School Administrator
EXPERIENCE: I have previous experience working with children in after school clubs prior to starting in Gilwern as a catering assistant in 2012.

CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: I like to see all children enjoying a happy and fulfilling experience while in school.
FUN BITS: I enjoy walking my dogs and reading. I have 2 teenage boys who keep me busy also. My favourite food is cheesecake. If I had a superpower it would be to breathe underwater.


Miss Neal

NAME: Sarah Neal
JOB TITLE: Admin/Class Support
EXPERIENCE: I am a past pupil of Gilwern School, and my children have also attended here. I have been a involved with the school for many years and have also played an active role as a valued member of GAP.
CLASS/YEAR GROUP: N/A
CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: I love being part of the Gilwern School Team and believe that learning should be fun. I support all teachers with admin duties and provide some class support within year 2.
FUN BITS: My hobbies are cake making and decorating, together with crosswords and puzzles. My favourite food is chocolate cake, closely followed by cheese.
If I had a Super Power, it would be to get all my jobs done within an hour.
A fun fact about me is that I have 2 Bearded Dragons as pets.

NAME: Vicky Price
JOB TITLE: Teacher
EXPERIENCE: I completed my training at the University of South Wales, Newport. I recently graduated from university and started in Gilwern as a newly qualified teacher in September 2015.

CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: I wish to create a safe, positive learning environment where children are valued, motivated to learn and, above all, happy.

NAME: Laurie Marsh
JOB TITLE: Class Teacher
EXPERIENCE: I graduated from Bangor University in 2015. I taught for a year at Brynmawr St Marys RC school. I am over the moon to join such a thrilling, welcoming team here at Gilwern.
